Air quality and smoke protection
Half Facepiece Respirator — This is what I wear in China. It filters particulates, cigarette smoke, cooking fumes, and organic vapors to a level no surgical mask comes close to. Medium size fits most faces. Yes, it looks serious. But it works.
While it looks extreme, a professional-grade mask is the most effective way to stay smoke-free in older ‘green’ trains and crowded station platforms
3M 2091 P100 filter cartridges — The correct filter for the 6502. Replace every 40 hours of active use or when you notice odor breakthrough. Pack two pairs for a two-week trip.
3M 8210 N95 respirator — For travelers who want protection without the industrial look. Significantly better than a surgical mask for particulates and smoke. Does not filter organic vapors (odors) the way the 6502 does, but much more socially comfortable to wear.
Noise management
ANC earbuds — Active noise cancellation makes train stations, which run continuous PA announcements at high volume, significantly less fatiguing. Any reputable ANC earbuds work. Anker Soundcore Q45 is a solid budget option. Sony WF-1000XM5 if you want the best available.
Navigation and translation
Offline translation — Not a product but a reminder: download Google Translate’s Chinese (Simplified) offline pack before you leave. The camera mode reads signs, menus, and ticket machines in real time with no internet required.
Physical address card — Ask your hotel to write their address in Chinese characters before you arrive. Keep it in your wallet. When technology fails, handing this to a taxi driver always works.
